OAXACA * MEXICO * 1970-1979

Portfolio, Commentary and Notes
A portfolio of black and white photographs taken during numerous craft buying trips to  craft villages around Oaxaca, Mexico.  Most of the photographs center on the artisans, their lives and their surroundings (always more interesting to me) rather than on the craft objects.  This book is the first in a planned series on other regions in Mexico; next, Michoacán and Chiapas
Hardcover with jacket, portfolio & commentary,  11” x 8.5”,  82 pages. 48 black and white images, published 2010,  $110 ppd.  (ISBN 978-1-4507-3327-4)

CHINA 1977

In 1977, The Peoples Republic of China had just opened up to visitors from the United States. I was part of a small delegation of artists and craftspeople with a focus on artisans and craft production in major cities in the eastern part of China: Beijing, Tsinan, Suchow, Nanking and Kwangchow.  It was an interesting time, a quiet sort of interim, as China, though still looking inward, was moving away from the strict methodology of its revolutionary communist past and had not yet begin the rapid economic growth so characteristic today.

Hardcover with jacket, portfolio and commentary, 11" X 8.5", 90 pages, 88 black and white images,  published 2010, $125 ppd. (ISBN: 978-1-4507-1846-2)

SOUTHEAST ASIA BASKETS, from the Collection of Clare Brett Smith

The baskets are for sale too and prices are listed in the catalogue.

Photographs of the baskets were taken by Malcolm Brown, my grandson, and those from the field by Burge or me.  Burge and I owned Primitive Artisan, importers of folk art, and were known to international development officers as  "compassionate importers", and to the trade as an idiosyncratic resource. We collected these baskets in Southeast Asia in the 1970s and, at that time, most of them were already antiques.

Although in the form of a book, this is actually a catalogue, soft cover, 11” x 8.5”, 56 pages, 57 images, published 2009, $59 ppd.

MEN AND BOYS, WOMEN AND CHILDREN, PAKISTAN 1979

This book is a portfolio and a travel memoir. We visited and traveled with Pakistani family friends for a month in the Northwest Frontier Province and the Northern Territories, along the Indus River and in the Karakoram Mountain range. The photographs look as though they were taken two hundred years ago, not thirty years. Today it is one of the world’s most dangerous spots, bordering Afghanistan, it’s a tribal land and never, I think, very peaceful.

Hardcover, with jacket, 11” x 8.5”, 90 pages, 101 images, published 2010, $135 ppd. (ISBN: 978-1-4507-2293-3)
